Department of Nuclear Chemistry
Synopsis:

The course is oriented to applications of nuclear methods and radionuclides, particularly in the field scientific research. The first part of the course presents production and application of artificial radionuclides, labeled organic compounds, and generators of short-lived radionuclides. Another part of the course focuses on isotope exchange reactions and methods of their investigation. It is followed by explanation of thermodynamic and kinetic isotopic effects. The remaining lectures are devoted to applications of nuclear methods in general and physical chemistry to study kinetics and mechanism of chemical reactions, structure of chemical compounds, solid phase surfaces, catalysis, and to determine physico-chemical parameters.

Requirements:

Knowledge of nuclear chemistry and physics on the level of a basic university course. Completed preceding course Application of Radionuclides 1.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Production of artificial radionuclides, reactor and cyclotron preparations.

2. Generators of short-lived radionuclides - generator of 99mTc.

3. Preparation of labeled organic compounds.

4. Isotope exchange reactions - kinetics of elementary/complex and homogeneous/

heterogeneous isotopic exchange, isotopic effect at isotopic exchange.

5. Methods applied in studying isotopic exchange - realization and evaluation.

Thermodynamic classification of exchange reactions .

6. Isotopic effects - explanation based on vibrations of a diatomic molecule,

dissociation energy, Morse potential .

7. Thermodynamic isotopic effect - theory, application.

8. Kinetic isotopic effect - theory, application.

9. Radionuclide methods at investigation of chemical reactions.

10. Radionuclide methods in electrochemistry, in studying structure of chemical

compounds.

11. Determination of physico-chemical parameters using radionuclide methods.

12. Investigation of solid phase surfaces and catalysis using radionuclide

methods, emanation method.

Study Objective:

The course Application of Radionuclides 2 continues the preceding course Application of Radionuclides 1 and extends the basic knowledge of applications of nuclear methods and radionuclides, particularly in the field scientific research. Physical principles of the methods utilizing isotopic exchange and isotopic effects are explained. Greater attention has been given to application of the nuclear methods in general and physical chemistry. The course is suitable mainly for the students considering research work in nuclear sciences within a

doctoral program.

Students will acquire competence in effective application of nuclear methods and radionuclides in both scientific research and technical and industrial practice
