Methods of the processing of signal from detectors of ionizating radiation, spectroscopical systems, data processing and overview of the related electronics.


Knowledge of the detectors of ionizing radiation and overview of electronics.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Basic systems for ionizating radiation measurement.Keystones of pulse electronics, signal, impedance, C-R and RC circuits, pulse transformator.

2. Interconnection of detecrors to other circuit, HV feeding and signal take off from GM counters and scintillation detectors by means of one coaxial cable, simultaneous take off time and amplitude information from scintillation and semiconductor detectors.

3. Voltage and charge sensitive preamplifiers, noise problematic, ways of integration capacitor discharge, block diagram, signal RESET (INHIBIT). Charge gains dependence on input capacity and preamplifier open loop gain.

4. Spectroscopy amplifiers. Amplifying, linearity and over range definitions. Signal shaping, function of special circuits as for as P/Z cancellation, base line restorer (BLR), PUR and their right set-up. Examples of amplifier diagrams.

5. Shape, time and amplitude measurements. Shape differentiation. Derivation of reference time, coincidence/anticoincidence, resolving time. Analog pulse amplitude measuring, single channel analyzers. Analog-to-digital converters.

6. Multichannel analysis. Principles, PHA and MCS operation mode. Multidimensional operation. Dead time, spectrum stabilization. DSP.

7. Spectrum evaluation. Response function, deconvolution, stripping, smoothing, peak analysis. Numerical processing.

8. Low and high voltages power supplies for nuclear electronics, requirements and their solutions. Protection circuits. Low dc current and charg measurement. Protection no/or under cooled semiconductor detector against HV connection.

9. Modular systems NIM, CAMAC, VME. Analog and logic signals standardization. Data exchange between units and computer control.

An overview of the methodology of signal processing and its use for spectroscopy of ionizing radiation.


Ability to work with spectroscopy electronics and to handle obtained results.
