Synopsis:

Forces and moments acting on the airplane. The equations of motion for an airplane. Airplane performance in steady flight. Performance in unsteady flight. Handling and operational qualities. The equations of airplane motion for small disturbances. Stability and controllability at longitudinal and lateral airplane motions. Evaluation of airplane operational qualities.

Requirements:

Completing the courses: Mechanics III., Low Speed Aerodynamics, High Speed Aerodynamics.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Forces and moments acting on the airplane.

2. The equations of motion for an airplane.

3. Airplane performance at steady flights. Straight level flight. Descent. Climb. Range, endurance. Horizontal turn.

4. Airplane performance at unsteady flights. Flights in horizontal and vertical planes. Flights with acceleration. Dive. Unsteady turn. Take-off and landing. 3D flights.

5. Handling and operational qualities.

5.1. Aerodynamic forces and moments in longitudinal and lateral motions. Aerodynamic forces at the actuation of the controls.

5.2. The equations of motion for small disturbances.

5.3. Stability. Static and dynamic stability at longitudinal and lateral airplane motions.

5.4. Controllability. Maneuverability and trim at longitudinal and lateral airplane motions.

5.5. Evaluation of handling and operational qualities.
