The aim is to give clear and logic description of construction architecture philosophy of aircraft propulsion units that is based on the need to produce thrust or useful power with high rate of safety and at the same time realized by the machinery as lightweight as possible attaining the highest possible total efficiency with reasonable operating cost.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Aircraft propulsion unit and its classification, piston engine with propeller, turbo-shaft engine turboprop engine, turbojet and turbofan engine, ram engine.

2. Piston engine, basic classification, two stroke and four stroke engines, layout, type of ignition, cooling, supercharging

3. Fuel supply, power control, ignition, lubrication, instrumentation, fire protection

4. Propeller, types of construction, variable pitch propeller, control mechanism

5. Turbine engine, main components. Compressor, combustion chamber, turbine, power turbine, exhaust nozzle, turbine and hot parts cooling systems.

6. Turbojet engine and its basic construction schemes, One shaft, two shafts, three shafts engines, Bypass engines, Separated exhaust flows, mixed exhaust flows , afterburning, Modular construction schemes, turboprop and turbo-shaft engines, with and without free power turbine, combined scheme.

7. Starting devices and ignition, fuel nozzles

8. Thrust augmentation, thrust reversal

9. Inlets and propelling nozzles, subsonic and supersonic, ice protection,

10. Fuel supply systems and control, FADEC, lubrication systems, accessory drives, controls and instrumentation

11. Fan, compressor and turbine blades and vanes, technological and material aspects

12. Power plant installation, inspection and maintenance

13. Vertical/short take-off and landing, thrust vectoring, tilt rotor systems, Coanda effect

14. Noise suppression systems
