Synopsis:

Mechanics of chip formation, primary and secondary deformation in chip formation, built-up edge formation, effect of cutting tool geometry on these factors, forces in cutting, vibrations and temperatures, reasons and forms of tool wear, tool life, machinability, cutting ability and cutting medium.

Requirements:

Knowledge of technology of machining methods.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Chip formation mechanics, deformation zones, diagrams of favourable chip formation.

2. The effect of workpiece material, cutting tool geometry, cutting conditions and other factors on primary deformation zone and the effect on machining process.

3. Secondary deformation, buit-up edge formation in different workpice materials and the effect on machining processes.

4. Minimum chip thickness, surface integrity, residual stresses and work hardening in machined surfaces.

6. Forces, torques and power, calculation, the effect of working parameters.

7. Vibrations in machining, the effect of working conditions.

8. Heat and temperatures, the effect of working conditions.

9. Reasons and forms of tool wear.

11. Optimum tool wear in roughing and finishing.

12. Tool life, effect of working conditions.

13. Machinability, cutting ability. Cutting medium, cutting fluids.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Chip formation mechanics, diagrams of favourable chip formation.

2. The determination of the relation between cutting ratio and cutting speed.

3. Forcess and torque measurement in cutting as a function of cutting conditions, the determination of empirical equations, specific cutting force as a function of feed rate.

4. Forcess and torque measurement in cutting as a function of cutting conditions, the determination of empirical equations, specific cutting force as a function of feed rate.

5. Forcess and torque measurement in cutting as a function of cutting conditions, the determination of empirical equations, specific cutting force as a function of feed rate.

6. The effect of working parameters on vibrations.
