Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering
Synopsis:

Main tasks of automatic control are explained by examples of control loops, where unified control loop variables, symbols, notations are introduced. Computing and plotting facilities in Matlab are shown from the viewpoint of usability in control system design. Demonstrative examples of level, pressure, temperature and position control.

Basic control algorithms are presented in a verbal and mathematical form and a block scheme based simulation is carried out. Models of controlled plants (objects, processes) will be derived in linear and nonlinear form and by means of responses significance of simulation model correctness can be shown (antiwindup). It will be possible to demonstrate these problems in a project as another subject assessed up to 5 credits.

Requirements:

Previous knowledge of linear algebra, complex calculus, Laplace transform, linear differential equations is advantageous but not essential.

Syllabus of lectures:

Principles of automatic control, terminology, tasks.

Control system as a tool for designing, modelling, investigating real control circuits.

Block schemes.

Controlled processes, description, modelling, ways of control. Controller selection and its parameter setting from the viewpoint stability and control quality. ^

Controllers operating continuously and discreetly in time - comparison, special features. Advanced control problems.

All demonstrated by examples continuously processed in MATLAB/Simulink program.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Lectures and exercises are mutually interconnected and hold in computer laboratory with immediate computer demo or own solving problems by means program Matlab/Simulink.

Study Objective:

In the course, students with mechanical engineering background both at bachelor and master level are acquainted with principles of automatic control presented by means of examples of processes and devices the students are familiar with. In addition to informative understanding nature of the solved control problems they get knowledge of notions used in control system theory and real practice in usage of MATLAB/Simulink software. Obtained skills can be also applied without the control in computation and dynamic simulation of technological processes.
