Department of Biomedical Technology
Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the graphically oriented development environment LabVIEW in terms of use for collection and analysis of process data, system control and signal generation and the possibility of communication with external HW through the VISA standard. The concept of the course is set to the maximum use of express solutions and design patterns for rapid application development. The practical exercises of the course will focus on the collection of process variables and automation of bioreactor perfusion systems for tissue engineering.

Requirements:

As a standard, teaching takes place in contact form and the course ends with an oral exam, which is preceded by written preparation. If the number of students is less than 5, teaching can take place in the form of guided self-study with regular consultations. Furthermore, it is required to prepare a written study by the student on a given topic in the field. The condition for admission to the exam is the completion of two laboratory exercises (evidenced by a protocol signed by the student, the head of the exercise and the guarantor of the course). Protocols will be archived.

Syllabus of lectures:

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Virtual Instrumentation - introduction, history, application in industry, science and research, method of creating codes

2. Code creation conventions, dataflow programming method, express tools

3. Cycles, decision algorithms, events

4. Design patterns and templates for data collection and analysis and management

5. DAQ systems for data collection and signal generation, possibilities of connection with another

6. Connection of laboratory devices via VISA and IVI standards, laboratory automation

7. Standardized laboratory protocols

8. Signal conduction from sensors and control of actuators, analog, digital interface

9. Automated data logging

10. Dynamic cultivation systems - operational requirements, implementation in incubators

Syllabus of tutorials:

Syllabus of exercises (block form of teaching after 4 teaching hours):

1. Basics of work in the LabVIEW system, use of express tools for application creation, design patterns for data collection and process automation, state machine, producer-consumer.

2. Data collection from sensors of non-electrical quantities using DAQ system, analysis and modification of signals in real time, recording in TDSMs format for further postprocessing - collection of process quantities from bioreactor, laboratory instrumentation and control, connection of external HW and communication via VISA standard - perfusion control bioreactor system.
