Synopsis:

Microbiology: Microorganisms, division. Non-cellular forms of infections - viruses. Procaryotes. Bacterial cell structure and function. Phylogenetic system of bacteria and archaea. Eucaryotes. Cell structure and function of eukaryotic microorganisms - fungi, protozoa. Metabolism and growth of microorganisms, life cycle of prokaryotic cells, growth curve. Influence of environmental factors on the growth of microorganisms - temperature, pH. Antimicrobials - antivirals, antibiotics and chemotherapeutics, mechanism of action, disinfection, sterilization. The microbiome of the human body. Human microbial diseases. Infectious diseases of the eye caused by microorganisms - viral, bacterial, fungal and caused by protozoa.

Immunology: Cells and organs of the immune system. Antigens. Development of the immune response. The main histocompatibility complex. T lymphocytes and cellular immunity. Cellular cytotoxicity. Cytokines. B lymphocytes and antibody production. Immunoglobulins. Defense functions of the immune system. Anti-infective immunity. Innate immunity. Allergic diseases. Nutrition and immunity, the effect of human microbiome on the immune system. Immunopathology. Immunodeficiency. Autoimmune diseases.

Requirements:

Classified credit requirements:

1. Participation in the exercises, in case of non-participation, an apology and exercises must be submitted upon agreement and replaced by the exercise leader.

2. Successful completion of the credit test (contains 20 questions), in order to be awarded the credit, the student must have the correct 60% of answers.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Microbiology: Organization and function in microbial cell. Procaryotic cell, binary fission. Phylogenetic system of bacteria and archea. Cyanobacteria.

2. Microbial nutrition, microbial growth - life cycle of procaryotic cell, growth curve, kinetics of bacterial growth.

3. Influence of environmental factors on microbial growth - temperature, pH, extreme environment. Antimicrobial, antibacterial agents - antibiotics and mechanisms of their effect, dezinfection and sterilization.

4. Energetic metabolism. Genetics and molecular biology of microorganisms.

5. Microbiom of human body.

6. Microbial diseases and their control.

7. Immunology: Cells and organs of the immune system.

8. Antigens.

9. Immune reaction.

10. Main histocompatibility complex. B-lymphocytes. Production of immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulins, function and structure. T-lymphocytes and cellular immunity. Cytotoxic lymphocytes. Cytokines.

11. Immunity against infection. Non-specific immunity. Allergic diseases. Immunity and nutrition.

12. Immunopathology. Immunodeficiency. Autoimmune diseases.

1. Sterilization and desinfection methods.

2. Basic praxis in microbiological laboratory.

3. Bacterial DNA isolation.

4. Bacterial cultivation.

5. Gram staining.

6. Imunogenetics - excercices

Study Objective:

Knowledge, skills, abilities and competences: overview and knowledge in the areas of general microbiology and immunology needed for further study. Ability to use clear microbiological and immunological knowledge in optics and optometry - infectious diseases of the eye.
