Synopsis:

Course participants will be introduced to the basics of Biochemistry. The course builds on the knowledge gained in general chemistry and extends this knowledge about the chemistry of living systems. The interpretation goes through the basic building structures of biological systems (amino acids, peptides, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids), biological membranes and molecular genetics to the most important metabolic processes. Particular attention is paid to the aspects necessary for understanding the methods of work in the biochemical and clinical laboratory, which are part of the follow-up chemical discipline.

The laboratories are focused on broadening the topics discussed in the lectures and their practical training, especially on the determination of biomolecules and the verification of their properties. Students should become familiar with the basic laboratory techniques of Biochemistry.

Requirements:

Conditions of classified assesment:

Obligatory and active attendance at all tutorials. Absences are acceptable for serious reasons only and must be apologized and recompensed.

For the attendance at each tutorial, student has to pass an entrance test at least for 50 %. In the other way, he has to recompense the session with the test on an other date. Student can recompense maximally two tutorials.

Student has to write and submit protocols from all lab sessions in sufficient quality.

At the end of the semester student has to pass a written final credit test. Student has one attempt for writing the final credit test. The final grade is created by the sum of both the points from the entrance tests and from the final test and in evaluated according to the ECTS scale.

Detail information in „Demands for passing the subject“ document found on the website.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to biochemistry

2. Nucleic acids

3. Amino-acids, peptides and proteins

4. Carbohydrates

5. Lipids and biomembranes

6. Enzymes

7. Principles of metabolism and important biochemical pathways

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Laboratory regulations, safety training and introduction to biochemistry laboratory work

2. Preparation of solutions and basics of pipetting

3. TLC of amino acids and DNA isolation

4. Properties, precipitation and denaturation of proteins

5. Properties and determination of carbohydrates

6. Properties of lipids and determination of enzyme activity

7. Compensation of exercises, completing the credit tequirements

Study Objective:

The goal of study is to understand the significance of biochemical compounds in living organisms, and to deduce their properties by the knowledge of their structure. After passing the course, student should be well versed in biochemical problems either of clinical diagnostics either of daily life. Further aim of this subject is to get work with scientific publications, search for biochemical information and to present obtained knowledge to other students.
