Synopsis:

Subject 144YLHN Mitigation of hazardous substances incidents deals with the causes of emergency events and prevention, analysis and evaluation. Examples of serious accidents in the past, ways of disposal and impact on humans and the environment are listed. Subject Mitigation of hazardous substances incidents is focused on the pollution of the environment by hazardous substances as a result of accidents and the leakage of these substances into individual components of the environment. It acquaints students with the issue of emergency events and crisis situations involving the release of dangerous substances, emergency planning, analysis and risk management.

Requirements:

credit - elaboration and presentation of the seminar work for the exercise - time range 15 - 20 min,

exam - written test

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Hazardous substances, lists of priority hazardous substances, Stockholm Convention on Priority Pollutants. Vulnerability, sensitivity and resilience of the territory; substance hazard index, classification of dangerous substances. Environmental components of the environment.

2. Water pollution, the fate of hazardous substances in the environment and their effect on individual components of the environment Protection of natural sources of drinking water from pollution and oil products - prevention, removal of pollution during water treatment

3. Air pollution, soil pollution, the fate of hazardous substances in the environment and their effect on individual components of the environment

5. Extraordinary events. Prevention of serious accidents. Handling of hazardous substances.

6. Risks, accidents. Environmental risk assessment; different methods of risk analysis

3. Presentation of seminar works - oil and oil substances - use; processing; oil accidents, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAU) - use; processing; accidents with PAU leakage, acids, louds, gases - use; processing; accidents with the escape of these substances

4. Presentation of seminar works of toxic metals and their compounds - use; processing, accidents with toxic metal leakage

5. Presentation of seminar works - other specific organic pollutants (dioxines, PCB, pesticides) - use; processing; accidents with a leakage of specific organic pollutants

6. Excursion

Study Objective:

Get to know the impact of hazardous substance accidents on the environment with a focus on accident prevention and removal of hazardous substances after an accident.
