Synopsis:

Effective operation of contemporary health facilities is not possible without a high degree of information technology integration and its impact will further increase in the future. This places high demands on all employees who must guarantee the operation of health care information systems and other database applications as well as perform advanced processing of huge amount of data produced by these systems using common office applications. The course introduces students with basic and advanced concepts and principals of information technologies and with advanced application of computer technology for storing, analysis and presentation of data. Students will also familiarize with architecture of computers and networks, structure of relational databases, data types and their storage and will also adopt basics of informational safety.

Requirements:

Conditions for credit approval:

1.Active presence on seminars (max 2 absences allowed)

2.Gain min 50 points out of 100 in complex evaluation system.

a)max 40 points – intermediate test

b)max 50 points – compulsory final test (min 50% score required)

c)max 10 points – activity on seminars

Prerequisite for a successful passing a test is the achievement of 50 % correct answers. By completion of component tasks from lectures or seminars a student can achieve up to 10 points. In total, a student can achieve up to 100 points. For a successful passing the course, min 50 points are required.

Evaluation corresponds to ECTS classification degrees.

Syllabus of lectures:

-Introduction to the course. Basic concepts of information technologies. Historical development of computers.

-Architecture of computers. Peripherals. Human-computer interface. Operating and file systems.

-Data types and standards. File types. Data processing using office applications. Introduction to MS Word.

-Spelling checking and use of custom dictionaries in Word, work with styles and templates. Team collaboration. Work with bibliographic references.

-Basics of MS Excel. Absolute and relative references in formulae and their use. Nested functions, graphs.

-Pivot tables in Excel, optimization and database functions. Presentations and data publication. Creation of MS Power Point presentations, presentation and software ergonomics.

-Databases, principal database objects and their functions. Database models.

-Queries, forms and reports in databases.

-Basics of network communication. OSI model, TCP/IP. Internet. Internet services. Distributed solutions, information systems. Data storage. Archiving and redundancy use for storing data.

-Security in information technologies, personal data protection. Legal software. Data import/export between database and other applications. Summary of the course.
