Synopsis:

Laboratory Diagnostics and Technology introduces the principles of bioanalytical methods used in clinical diagnostics. Emphasis is put on the data types produced by these methods as well on the tools for their analysis.

During the tutorials students will be introduced into the basic principles of computer data managing and processing.

Requirements:

Credit requirements:

Active attendance at all tutorials. Students has to come in time and be well prepared. Absences are acceptable for serious reasons only, have to be apologized and recompensed. Working out all assigned exercises in satisfying quality.

Examination conditions:

Student has to pass a written test comprising the topics discussed during the lectures and tutorials, including assigned individual study. The exam is graded according to the ECTS scale, to pass the exam, the test must be evaluated at least at 50 %. If so, student can pass also an oral exam to improve the achieved grade.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Principles of bioanalytical methods and clinical diagnostics.

2. Optical methods, NMR and X-ray analysis.

3. Electrochemical methods. Biosensors. Automation in a clinical laboratory.

4. Electrophoresis and other electromigration techniques. Membrane processes.

5. Imunochemistry and genetic methods.

6. Chromatography. Extraction and precipitation. Centrifugation.

7. Mass spectrometry.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Properties of analytical methods and the basic rules of „work with nubers“.

2. Spectrophotometric data analysis - calibration curve.

3. Potentiometric data - titration curve processing.

4. Electromigration data outputs, image analysis, creating and processing of densitometric curves.

5. Enzyme kinetics - non-linear regression method.

6. Chromatograph characteristics. Centrifugation parameters.

7. MS data analysis.

Study Objective:

Goal of the study is to get to know the principles of common bioanalytical methods used in a clinical laboratory and to understand the possibilities of lab data processing and analysis. After passing the course, students should be familiar with the terms used in the clinical diagnostics context.
