Supervisor:
Department of Architectural Engineering
Synopsis:

The aim is to present 1) the principles of heat and moisture transfer in materials, building elements and buildings, and 2) the effects of non-force loads on building elements. Students study to apply basic physical principles at simple examples. The subject introduces a theoretical basis for practically oriented subjects, such as Construction Project or Timber Constructions. The aim of the course is to provide information for: 1) understanding of the effects of climatic loads on the building envelope, 2) understanding of the transport processes taking place in the building envelope (transfer of heat, moisture and air), 3) understanding of the design principles and requirements we impose on building components.

Requirements:

1) Credits for practical classes are obtained for active consultations and the development of tasks assigned in exercises.

2) The final examination consists of a theoretical test and two calculation problems. The final grade is a weighted average of the distinct parts of the exam

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Climatic loads acting on the building envelope and hygrothermal processes in the building envelope. Change in climatic conditions over time (changes at the global and local level).

2. Humidity in air - ideal gas law for water vapor. Basic principles - balance equations (conservation laws) and transport equations.

3. Moisture transport I. Diffusion of water vapor in porous materials. Retention of moisture in porous materials - sorption curve.

4. Moisture transport IÍ. Capillary transport. Transport of water vapor due to air movement.

5. Historical development of building envelopes. General requirements for building envelopes. Requirements for moisture-safety of building envelopes. System of functional layers of the building envelope - choice of materials, order of layers, thickness of layers, connection of layers, technology.

6. Principles to influencing moisture balance of building components. Examples of real moisture-related problems including analysis of their cause and possible solutions.

7. Volumetric changes due to action of non-force loads - a beam from one homogeneous material.

8. Volumetric changes due to action of non-force loads - a beam from several layers of homogeneous materials.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Ú1 Thermal and moisture balance of the basement. Preparation of boundary conditions for Ú3.

2. Consultations.

3. Ú2 Analysis of the sorption curve of the given building material.

4. Consultations.

5. Ú3 Drying of moisture from building components. Drying of a basement wall.

6. Consultations.

7. Ú4 Thermal stress - a homogeneous beam subjected to temperature change.

8. Consultations.

9. Consultations.

10. Ú5 Thermal stress - a multilayered beam subjected to temperature change.

11. Consultations.

12. Consultations + credits.

Study Objective:
