Synopsis:

The course is designed for students who have successfully completed the full secondary school English language course at least at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It provides an introduction into English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESP, EAP), i.e., into fundamentals of vocabulary and style typical of professional oral and written communication situations. Thus it covers topics related to the student´s life and needs as well as topics of subtechnical interest. Attention is also paid to extending the knowledge of grammar issues used in EAP.

competence at the CEFR A2 level at least

Syllabus of lectures:

University study, curriculum vitae. Basic principles of academic formal language, difference between formal and informal discourse, false friends. Working with various types of dictionaries. Describing objects (shape, size, structure, how it works, introduction to process description), expressing instructions. Extending the knowledge of grammar - word formation, tenses, passive voice, relative clauses, if clauses.

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: word formation, tenses, passive voice, relative clauses, if clauses. Basic differences between formal and informal language, fundamental subtechnical vocabulary, false friends.

Skills:

To work with a dictionary, read and understand subtechnical texts, apply the acquired knowledge in more professional contexts both in speaking and writing: to write a formal piece of text based on instructions (guided writing).
