Department of Biomedical Technology
Synopsis:

The course is focused on imaging methods based on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrical impedance tomography (EIT). There are included topics as the theoretical foundations, principles of imaging techniques and their use in clinical practice with respect to the constraints following from the technical specifications.

Requirements:

The conditions:

Sufficient participation in seminars - is allowed one excused absence (medical certificate) and successful final test, in which the questions will be answered by students. The number of questions is form 5 to 15. Some questions may or may not have higher weight in the evaluation than others, for example those that involve complex numerical task or require a comprehensive approach to the solution. In a single issue, it is possible to obtain either the full number of points or no points only. For the credit, you must obtain min. 50% of the possible maximum achievable points. Rating according to the ECTS grading scale.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction, terminology, an overview of MRI systems. Basic principles of the creation, registration and processing of signals at NMR, relaxation processes and their possible influence, image creation.

2. Pulse spin-echo sequence, its modifications and practical use. Special pulse sequences and their use in imaging of specific tissues.

3. HW and SW for MRI. Details of a particular system.

4. Functional magnetic resonance imaging and its methods.

5. Selected chapter of the NMR system, characteristic of specialized RF coils.

6. Principles of EIT, its diagnostic significance. HW for EIT.

7. EIT signal processing, image reconstruction, methods of mathematical evaluation of the EIT image in relation to the diagnosis.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Calculations in NMR.

2. Experimental laboratory tasks with RF coils for MRI.

3. Experimental laboratory tasks with RF coils for MRI.

4. Experimental laboratory tasks with RF coils for MRI.

5. Numerical simulation of the process of NMR image reconstruction and creation I.

6. Numerical simulation of the process of NMR image reconstruction and creation II.

7. Measurement of the EIT system, data processing measured by EIT.

Study Objective:

The aim is to illustrate the basic principles of MRI and EIT in connection with the importance and limitations of technical parameters that can affect the quality of the output image.
