The subject discusses telecommunication networks from different perspectives - physical principles, structure, applications, etc. Students are introduced to elementary concepts and principles in the area of communications. The presented principles and methods are illustrated using examples of specific communication networks - ISDN, data transmission networks, fixed as well as mobile ones. Emphasis is put on applications related to power lines.

In order to obtain the credits, students have to meet the following conditions:

1) Be successful in the test (at least „E“).

2) Succesfully deliver 2 assigned reports.

3) Participate in all practical exercises.

The examination is based on a test, optionally followed by an oral part.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Telephone channel, voice signal processing, Frame E1.

2. Backbone transmission systems and networks.

3. PDH, SDH, OTH transmission systems.

4. Architecture of digital switching systems, subscribers lines, ISDN. 5. Switching networks type S and T, signaling. 6. Synchronisation in networks, distribution of clocks in networks, creation of slips.

7. Next generation network (NGN).
