Department of Nuclear Chemistry
Synopsis:

The course deals with the state (speciation) and physicochemical behaviour of very low concentrations (traces) of matter, especially radionuclides, in homogeneous and microheterogeneous systems and with methods of their study. It presents detailed discussion of formation and properties of colloidal forms of radionuclides and of methods of work with solutions containing traces to be studied. The object of the lecture is also the distribution of traces in macroheterogeneous systems, particularly the coprecipitation, adsorption and electrodeposition of traces.

Requirements:

Students should have a good knowledge of physical chemistry of solutions, including colloid chemistry.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Peculiarities in the behaviour of trace amounts and concentrations of substances (traces), concept and importance of Trace Chemistry (Radiochemistry).

2.Methods of analysis of ionic and molecular forms of traces in solutions.

3.Effect of solution composition on ionic and molecular forms (on speciation) of traces in solution.

4.Colloidal forms of traces in solutions (trace colloids, radiocolloids).

5.Methods of study of colloidal forms of traces in solutions.

6.Effect of pH and composition of solution on the formation and properties of trace colloids.

7.Effect of concentration of traces and time on the formation and properties of trace colloids.

8.Methods and techniques of work with very low concentrations of substances.

9.Distribution of traces between a solution and a solid phase in státu nascendi (coprecipitation, syncrystallization).

10.Sorption of traces from solutions on the surface of solids. Desorption.

11.Electrochemical deposition of traces on metals.

12.Speciation and behaviour of traces in other systems, particularly in the liquid-liquid and solid-gas systems.

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

In the course students will gain the knowledge of peculiarities of the physicochemical behaviour of matter, particularly of radionuclides, in homogeneous and microheterogeneous systems and of their distribution in macroheterogeneous systems. Thay will also gain competence to choose a suitable method for analysis of the speciation and behaviour of traces in these systems and to work correctly with solutions containing trace concentrations of radionuclides.
