Synopsis:

The lecture is divided to a description of the heavy and light charged particles passage through a matter, then the interaction of photons and neutrons as typical representants of neutral particles. The lecture is an introduction to the calculation exercise which is the carrying part of the subject. A student learns solution of typical problems and gets an experience in a use and typical values of the variables defined in the practical and experimental nuclear physics.

Requirements:

Knowledge of basic course of physics

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Introduction, the variables describing the heavy charged particles passage through a matter.

2.Bethe-Bloch formula

3.Fluctuation of the range and direction of the heavy charged particles after a passage through a matter, Bragg curve, delta-electrons.

4.Energy loss mechanisms of light charged particles, ionisation losses.

5.Radiation losses, bremmstrahlung, electromagnetic shower.

6.Total energy loss, beta-radiation absorption.

7.Synchrotron radiation, Čerenkov radiation, transition radiation.

8.Exponential gamma-rays absorption law, variables describing passage of the gamma-radiation through a matter.

9.Photoeffect, Compton scattering, electron-positron pair creation.

10.Processes of the neutron interaction with a matter.

11.Typical neutron reactions.

12.Neutron interaction cross sections.
