Supervisor:
Department of Natural Sciences
Synopsis:

In the first and largest part the principles and approaches of modern

fluorescence spectroscopy will be discussed. Each specific approach based on

fluorescence spectroscopy will be illustrated on biological applications. The

second part is devoted to dyes used in biological fluorescence spectroscopy. The

third part is dealing with fluorescence microscopy and single molecule

techniques. Again biological and medical relevant applications of those

techniques will be discussed. The last lecture is dealing with Photodynamic

Therapy, which is indeed a fluorescence application in medicine.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Absorption of light and electronic transitions

2. Principles and histrory of fluorescence

3. Fluorescence Lifetime and its biological application

4. Fluoresccence Anisotropy and its biological applications

5. Fluoresccence Quenching and its biological applications

6. Solvent relaxation method and its application in biological sciences

7. Theodor Foerster: Resonance energy transfer and excimer formation

8. Fluorophores and Labelling

9. Green Fluorescent Protein and its applications

10. Confocal and two-photon microscopy

11. Principles of Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) and its

application in biomembrane research

12. Application of FCS in development of carriers for non-viral gene therapy
