Synopsis:

The goal is to provide a basic knowledge of theoretical ethics, increase students' awareness of the ethical aspects of decision making in health care, to give insight into contemporary issues of ethics of health care and teach the knowledge and skills required to deal with ethical dilemmas.The course should also help students to formulate their own ethical opinions and learn how to defend it.

Lectures:

1st Theoretical foundations of ethics. Ethics as a matter of human freedom. Philosophical anchoring current medical ethics, discourse ethics, exemplary of the argument.

2nd History of medical ethics. Ethics as part of a traditional medicine (Hippocrates). The emergence of physicianment of ethics as a modern industry (1969 establishment of The Hastings Center). Causes of treatment-Kara ethics. Dehumanization of medicine and its solution in the form of patients' rights movement. New dilemmas growing out of new technological possibilities. The problem of regulation of clinical research

3rd Legal standards of international and national ethical growing consensus in the EU. Bioethics convention and its amendments. GCP and its application in European legislation. Directive 2001/20/EC and its development into the Czech legislation and in practice.

4th Patients' rights as a countermeasure against the dehumanization of medicine. Gradual implementation of a code of ethicaltion of patients' rights in legislation. Ethics technology medicine. Professional and value judgments in medical decision making. Informed consent.

5th Informed consent as a central point for the right of patient selfdetermination and the basis of adequate communication.

6th Decision-making at the end of life, rights of patients in coma, the problem informed voice in these patients. Previous directives, the role of family and medical team in decision-making at the end of life of the patient. Ethics of communication with his family in the in-patient tenzivní and intensive care. Problem related rights of the patient is unconscious and dies lého.

7th The problem of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Dutch and Swiss model. Vs euthanasia. „letting die“. The problem of futile treatment.

8th Ethics of transplantation medicine. Ethical aspects of brain death, „opting out“ and „opting in“ systems of organ procurement. The role of families in transplantation medicine. The anonymity of the donor and beneficiary.

9th Ethical aspects of assisted reproduction, cloning, stem cell research on embryos.

10th Ethical regulation of research. The problem of research on subjects unable to provide informed consent, vulnerable groups in research. The system of ethical committees.

Study Objective:

The main goal of subject is in the first step to give students necessary knowledge in general and health care ethics. They will learn to distinguish ethical, dilemmas and to be well oriented in contemporary ethical debate both in health care and in the society. Received information will help students efficiently to take part in ethical debate on various problems. They will be able to identify and name ethical problem, ascribe it adequately and weigh arguments for possible solutions.
