Synopsis:

A course dealing with practical exercise on geotechnical tests in laboratory and in-situ activities (The Josef Underground Educational Facility, www.uef-josef.eu). It focuses on laboratory determination of soil and rock parametres neccessary for geotechnical calculations and design - basic physical and hydrophysical properties, strength and deformation parametres.

Requirements:

No prerequisites.

Syllabus of lectures:

1 - Introduction, laboratory equipments, safety rules in laboratory, course works systém

2 - Densities, determination of degree of saturation

3 - Particle size distribution: sieve analysis, sedimentary method

4 - Atterberg limits: liquid limit - cone and Cassagrande method, plasticity limit

5 - Proctor standard test

6 - Deformation and strength characteristics: oedometric modulus, compressibility, uniaxial strength

7 - Shear parametres, permeability

8 - Hydrophysical properties: water absorptivity, capilarity, swelling, swell index

9 - Strength parametres: tension, tension under bending, shear, axiator tests, triaxial test

10 - Abrasivity - Böhm apparatus, Termophysical properties

11, 12 - Non destructive testing - Schmidt method, Poldi method, in-situ sampling (in UEF Josef)

13 - Strain, stress detection - laboratory, in-situ, thermometers, instrumentation (in UEF Josef)
