Synopsis:

Introduction to general chemistry - chemical bond, compounds, reactions, equilibrium. Chemistry of environment - water, atmosphere, pedosphere. Chemistry of building materials - inorganic binders, glass, ceramic, metals, natural polymers, wood, synthetic polymers on C and Si basis. Introduction to degradation of building materials and to analytical chemistry.

Requirements:

No prerequisities.

Syllabus of lectures:

Introduction to chemistry studies, principles of general chemistry, inorganic and organic compounds nomenclature.

Fundamentals of thermodynamics, Chemical reactions, kinetics of chemical reactions.

Water: water circulations in nature, physico-chemical water properties, chemical composition, substances presence in water and their importance.

Water: drinking and sewage water, water purification, water in building, ram water, water protection.

Air and atmosphere: atmosphere composition, atmospheric pollution, dispersion and diffusion of pollutants in atmosphere, reactions in atmosphere, atmosphere protection.

Soil: composition, properties, pollution, soil chemistry, soil in building, soil protection, remediation of contaminated soil.

Chemical composition of building raw materials (primary and secondary), chemistry of inorganic bonding compounds I.

Chemistry of inorganic bonding compounds II, aggregates.

Chemical properties of glass, ceramics, and refractories.

Metals in building (fundamental and chemical properties, corrosion, preventions against corrosion).

Macromolecular compounds on carbon and silica basis, plastics in building (fundamental and chemical properties) Wood and cellulose, asphalt, tar.

Degradation of non-metal building materials - physical, chemical, and biological. Sampling and sample preparation, fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Mistakes of chemical analysis.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Nomenclature.

Fundamental chemical calculations.

Composition of mixtures.

Preparation of solutions, balaces in mixtures.

Stoichiometric calculations.

Balancing of chemical equations.

Practical excersise in water analysis.

Practical excersise in analysis of building materials.

Study Objective:

The goal of study is orientation in chemical processes taking place in environment and building materials. Student is well oriented in chemical nature of building materials, raw materials and production of them. She/he is able to evaluate degradation processes of building materials.
