Synopsis:

Classification and behaviour of soils, soil testing, earth pressures, assessment of stability and compression of selected tasks. Basic design methods for shallow footings,

piles, retaining structures, foundation pits, sheet pile walls.

Syllabus of lectures:

Introduction to multi-phase media description, classification and behaviour, compressibility and strength, soil testing, earth pressures, assessment of stability and compression of selected tasks, soil compaction, applications in civil engineering.

Basic design methods for shallow footings,

piles, retaining structures, foundation pits, sheet pile walls,

anchors and soil improvement. Principles of monitoring in

foundation engineering. Use of Eurocode 7. Selected case

histories.

Acquaintance with basic conceptions of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, elements of calculations and design of geotechnical structures for students of Civil Engineering program
