Synopsis:

The course is a sequel to courses 04ABU1 and 04ABU2 and student will have passed examination 04ABUK. It concentrates on further written functions specific to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) (instructions, manuals, description of processes, functions, etc.). Increasing attention is given to extending subtechnical vocabulary, text grammar, and text comprehension. It also includes oral communication (e.g., expressing views and ideas, objections).

Requirements:

Student will have passed examination 04ABUK.

Syllabus of lectures:

Topics are based on the textbook and cover namely: computing support, people in computing, data security and computer crime, software engineering, recent developments, future of IT, electronic publishing.

Language structures typical of computer language, namely: modals, phrasal verbs, causative verbs. Interpreting visual data, comparisons.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: modal verbs, phrasal verbs in technical texts, subordinate clauses, extended more professional vocabulary.

Skills:

To search specific information in written texts or in listening, use various reading strategies depending on purpose, take notes from reading and listening, speak briefly on a topic from the student´s field usign notes, describe a process, express agreement, disagreement, opinion.
