- Synopsis:

Student will acquire information concerning settlement structures, historical and regional points of view, history of particular physical planning formations (forms of built-up areas), the nature of landscape frame within cadastre limits. Changes (transformations) within the countryside during the last century, namely in agriculture technologies, housing, transportation, etc. There are two dominating trends for the future: new building activities, including the expansion of suburbs and efforts to regenerate the traditional outlook of villages and isolated buildings within the countryside. The deep understanding of relation and ties among people, built environment and landscape will be the starting point for future of countryside planning and creative building. Meetings with representatives of self-governments of individual communities will be of great help when training participatory and environmental planning. Theoretical background will be combined with practical field studies.

1.Philosophy of the countryside: introduction; the way to permanent settlements; culture of villages: history; transformation of the countryside; sustainable life within the countryside.
2.Settlements: historical layouts - formations; contemporary formations.
3.Villages´ built-up areas in the history and in the present.
4.Villages´ cadastres outside built-up areas in history and at present.
5.Countryside planning and documentation (regional, master and regulation plans).
6.Rural sociology; quantitative and qualitative surveys.
7.Preservation and protection of cultural heritage within the countryside (vernacular arch. and sites: reserves and zones; protected zones of cultural landscape); outdoor museums; protection „in situ“.
8.Governmental „Program for villages and countryside regeneration“; EU programs for promotion of countryside economy.
9.Buildings in the countryside: tradition and present situation.
10.Agricultural buildings: traditional; mass production areas; adequate and inadequate uses; perspectives.
11.Building Code: chapters, concerning location of buildings, size and parameters of plots, building permissions, etc.
12.Communities´ self-governments, micro-regions, integration of villages.
13.Recapitulation of all the above lectures.
14.Presentation of students´ studies.

To be acquainted with different types of urbanistic formations and buildings. To be informed about countryside revitalization and development programs (Czech, EU). To be oriented in suburbanization issues, in communities´administration, in trends concerning transformation of countryside. To work out specific graphic and written seminar work.
