Department of Concrete and Masonry Structures
Synopsis:

Design of plain and reinforced concrete

members, design of masonry members. Actions, material

properties, geometrical data, modeling. Assessment of effects

of load and resistance of members. Ultimate and serviceability

limit states, detailing rules. Seminars are devoted to

practical problems of designing concrete and masonry members.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Mechanics of plain, reinforced concrete members. Design process.

2. Limit states and design situation. Concrete: stress-strain diagram, shrinkage, creep.

3. Reinforcing steel: stress-strain diagram. Conditions for durability of concrete members. Analysis of concrete beams.

4. Bending: Design procedures for rectangular, T and general shape of cross section. Arrangement of bending reinforcement in beams.

5. Shear in beams. Truss model of beahaviour of slender beams. Design procedure for shear reinforcement.

6. Punching shear in slabs and foundations. Design procedures for punching reinforcement.

7. Columns - combined axial force and bending. Behaviour of tied and spiral columns.

8. Interaction diagram for concrete columns. Design of short columns. Detailng.

9. Behaviour and analysis of slender columns. Design of slender columns.

10. Serviceability limit states. Uncracked and cracked beams. Calculation of stress.

11. Development of cracks. Direct and indirect loads. Calculation of crack widths.

12. Load-deflection behaviour of concrete beams. Calculation of deflection.

13. Masonry members. Properties of masonry materials (masonry elements and mortar).

14. Design procedure for masonry members.
