Supervisor:
Department of Building Structures
Synopsis:

Development of carpenter roof truss systems and their characteristic features. Division of economical roof truss system from various materials, their comparison and evaluation. Comparison of compact rectangular beam with the beam of I section from different point of views. Roof truss of planks, glued collar, exposed stressing cables, steel garlands. Combined roof truss concrete - wood, steel - wood. Wooden lattice-work from fastener point of view, Complementary structures of roof truss - dormers, skylights etc. Specific particularities of roof trusses at penthouses, solution of thermal bridges.

Requirements:

a) giving of seminar work

b) sufficient presence on lessons

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Development of carpenter roof truss systems and their characteristic features; differences in load transfer and function of individual structural elements. Division of economical roof truss from point of view: reinforced concrete, wood, steel, combination - their advantages and disadvantages.

2. Comparison of compact rectangular beam with the beam of I section from static, structural and fire point of view - the utilization of material on the basis of normal and tangential stress along the height of section. Beams of I section with single and double webs.

3. Roof of wood plank truss with various fasteners - transversal and longitudinal bracing; application for attics, forms and dimensions of individual elements including fasteners. Application for penthouses, their advantages and disadvantages, examples.

4. Wooden lattice-work from fastener point of view, their assessment from static, fire, technological, economic and structural point of view. Comparison wooden lattice work with steel one - the variants with welded tubular and angle structures.

5. Economical wooden roof truss with exposed stressing cables applying as rafters and purlins. The principle of single and double exposed stressing cable and strut frame. Division of stress along the height of section for the both cases, the function of adjusting screw.

6. Glued collar roofs - function, forms and dimensions of individual elements including fasteners. Transversal a longitudinal bracing, the taking-up of horizontal forces. Application for attics - advantages and disadvantages. Simplification of classic carpenter connections by steel fasteners.

7. Light steel garland roof truss - function, forms and dimensions of individual elements, the solution of thermal bridges and suspended ceiling. Transversal a longitudinal bracing, the details of joints, taking-up of horizontal forces, the function of adjusting screw.

8. Economical combined roof truss of concrete-wood and steel-wood: function, forms and dimensions of individual elements including fasteners. Transversal a longitudinal bracing, the taking-up of horizontal forces. Application for attics - advantages and disadvantages.

9. Economical classic post less roof truss with the application of steel frame, transversal supporting structures in the place of purlin connection (beam, wall), rigid strutting beams - transversal a longitudinal bracing, the taking-up of horizontal forces.

10. Complementary structures of roof truss - dormers, skylights etc. Their forms, structure, dewatering, details. Tinsmith elements on the roof. Specific particularities of roof trusses at penthouses.

11.Video, prospects, examples

12. Wooden roof truss structure of lamella - function, forms and dimensions of individual elements including fasteners. Transversal a longitudinal bracing, the taking-up of horizontal forces. Roof cladding composition, details including dewatering.

13.Specificity of square tower roof truss. Roofing of calottes and domes with lantern - the principles of structural solution. Transversal a longitudinal bracing, the taking-up of horizontal forces. Roof cladding composition, details including dewatering.

14. Field trip

Syllabus of tutorials:

Application of individual above mentioned points on practical examples. Selection of one topic for seminar work.
