The course represents the first stage of the five-semester programme, its final aim being reading and understanding professional texts written in Russian. Thus it begins with mastering the Russian alphabet (for both eading and writing skills) and fundamentals of grammar enabling the student to engage in short basic everyday communication situations and listening. The student will also be able to read a short text with marked stress, will have a general understanding of its contents and will be able to summarize it.

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of phonetics, morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: stressed, unstressed syllables, block letter and small letter Cyrillic, intonation of declarations and questions, shifting stress, I. and II. conjugation of main verbs in the present tense, noun and pronoun singular, job and nationality
Skills:
their application in everyday communication, namely: to communicate simply in chosen everyday situations, read a short text with marked stress, generally understand the contents and repeat it.
