summer semester
Course FM2 builds on course FM1. Linguistic structures and competence acquired in previous study are systemized and expanded. Reading popular science texts is focused on with the stress on features typical for technical and scientific language (passives, nominalization, word formation). Topics: power engineering, environment, Internet, success of French science and technology, French scientists, artists and architects. Description of an object or device,shapes,dimensions,material.

Linguistic knowledge and competence corresponding to the M1 course.
- Syllabus of lectures:

Revision and systemization of grammar structures: simple future tense, subjonctif, passive,subordinate clauses, nominalization, word formation (items occuring in techical and scientific texts.)Reading popular science and technical texts, interpretation,summaries.
General topics: Old and modern architecture, regions in France
Specific topics from Lecture notes (waves,temperatures, nuclear power, lasers,history of speed of light measurement...)

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus.
- Study Objective:

Knowledge:
Knowledge of morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: verb structures for speaking about the past and expressing possile, unreal and subjective states and actions. Word formation. Infinitive and participle clauses, gerund, passivization. Pronouns review and practice. Vocabulary expansion with particular stress on specific and technical vocab. Pronunciation and spelling developed together with new vocab and grammar.
Skills:
Application of acquired knowledge in everyday communication and in more professional contexts: reading of general, popular science and technical texts with a dictionary, skimming, scanning, summary. Correct oral communication in social environment and on technical topics, including student´s specialization. Writing of : a paper, transactional letter.
Qualify for admission to the higher level course.
