Synopsis:

Motto: measure to understand

Functional organisation of living organisms. Basic concepts of systemic approach to human organism. Integrated functions and importance of systems offering development for biomedical technicians and engineers. Introduction into experimental and investigative methods used in physiology and medicine. Examples of modern technologies used in medicine.

Requirements:

Written answers to submitted questions and problems (similar to those of the examination).

Written examination: 3 hours for 15 questions (9 multiple choice answers, 3 interpretations of graphs, 3 calculations.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Introduction

Systems biology, systems physiology and medicine.

Thermodynamics of living systems, principles and classification of biological transports.

2.From cell to tissues and organs

Cell structure and basic functions.

Cell energetics: genesis and use of chemical, mechanical, electrical and thermal energy.

Functional hierarchy of living organisms, principles of homeostasis and adaptation.

Experimental approach and models.

3.Respiratory and circulatory systems

Physical principles of exchange and transport of gases and fluids.

Heart automatism, mechanics and energetic, distribution of the heart output.

Microcirculation and capillary exchanges.

Regulation of respiration and blood circulation, relationship with acid-base balance.

Investigation of respiratory and circulatory functions.

Artificial respiration, cardio-stimulation, vascular re-canalisation, artificial valves.

4.Excretion system

Physical principles of urine formation, polarity of cell transports.

Homeostasis of volume and composition of the electrolytic compartments.

Relationships among the kidney, respiration and blood circulation.

Investigation of renal functions, haemodialysis.

5.Digestive system

Physical and chemical principles of digestive functions.

Motility of the digestive tube (modelling and animation) and its regulation („brain-gut axis“).

Investigation of digestive motility, „smart pills“ (demonstration of Magnet Tracking System).

6.Nervous system

A/D and D/A conversion (demonstration of an action potential: binary character and propagation).

Modelling of action potential (electrical, mathematical and molecular representations).

7.Locomotor system

Physical principles of posture and movement, from motor unit to motor program.

Investigation of posture and motion, cognitive functions.

Stereotactical interventions, „neural interfaces“.

Syllabus of tutorials:

4 series of problems to be solved at home, in class correction and discussion of results.

Excitability of nervous excitability (peripheral nerve explanted ex vivo).

Study Objective:

To get a good insight into integrated human functions interesting for bioengineers.

To understand the principles of experimental and investigative methods used in physiology and medicine.

To be able to find open problems and imagine their solution
