Synopsis:

Basics of solar energy use for heat and cold supply into buildings. Solar collectors and systems.

Requirements:

Basics of thermal engineering.

Subject Environmental Engineering.

Syllabus of lectures:

Geometry of solar radiation. Models of solar irradiation calculation. Measurement of solar irradiation. Optical and thermal properties of glazings. Advanced glazings. Optical and thermal properties of absorption surfaces. Thermal storage (sensible heat, latent heat, sorption heat, chemical reactions). Heat stores (water, stratification). Solar collectors(liquid, flat-plate, vacuum tube, air). Collector efficiency. Solar systems for hot water preparation and space heating. Solar systems design and balancing. Solar system components design. Solar cooling (absorption cycles, adsorption cooling).

Syllabus of tutorials:

Calculation of solar irradiation on generally oriented and sloped surface by different diffuse solar radiation models.Heat transfer through glazing. Calculation of heat transmittance.

Solar collector efficiency. Determination of efficiency factor F?, collector heat removal factor FR, absorber geometry and material influence on collector efficiency. Heat storage with phase change. Design of solar domestic hot water system and design of combined solar systems for hot water and space heating for family house. Balancing of solar system heat gains. Design of components for solar hot water system in multifamily house (collector area, pipe dimension, insulation thickness, expansion tank volume, safety valve design).

Study Objective:

Gaining theoretical overview on ways of solar energy use in buildings and basics of solar thermal systems design.
