Performance Appraisal & Management and Controlling provides an insight into performance appraisal in terms of the theory and practice of the psychology of work and organisation, explains the concept of performance in the context of values and motivation, describes performance management systems and appraisal-generated conclusions as a platform for further HRM efforts, particularly education, career planning and remuneration. How to conduct an HR audit and analyse jobs; restructuring opportunities; evaluation of jobs in the context of an organisation's strategy; identification of key professions and positions; implementation of HR controlling tools; identification of negative aspects (high job-leaving rate, high illness rate, low productivity, degree of utilisation of working hours, risk prediction, prevention possibilities); monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of HRM processes.

The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with staff appraisal procedures ad methods and show them how to design an appraisal system that is suitable for the organization concerned. Furthermore, the course explores the key procedures of implementing a performance appraisal and management system in an organization and also deals with some intercultural differences. The agenda includes appraisal interview practice and analysis of mistakes made by appraisers. The students will get familiar with quantity- and quality-oriented tools of HR controlling and its analytical aspects and will learn how to apply these procedures and policies in practice.
