Students will be introduced to the basics of a general biology course. They will discuss in particular the chapters on cellular and subcellular levels. Chapters will be routed to and related to general biology, the organization of living systems, organization and functioning of cells. Cytology (cell as a system of biological membranes and their functions, membrane organelles, Cytoskeletal structures), molecular and cellular biology, biopolymers (nucleic acids and proteins), molecular genetics (genetic information, replication, transcription and translation), mutations, cell cycle (mitosis, meiosis, their regulation), differentiation and aging, cell death (apoptosis and necrosis), cellular factors and external environmental factors, the basics of genetics - phenotype and genotype, hybridization methods, Mendel's laws, basic cytogenetics. Fundamentals of Human Genetics, and gonosomal autosomal inheritance, the human karyotype, chromosomal aberrations. Modern methods of studying the human genome, the genetic control of metabolism, pharmacogenetics, Immunogenetics, genetics and medicine, population biology, evolution of living systems.
