This course provides a typology of town and country through a study of their social creators and cultural canons. It looks at differences between the ancient Mediterranean and Transalpine Europe, and problems arising in the study of archaeological discoveries and pre-historic cultures. It examines the significance of Christianity in intellectual and technical development in the Czech Lands from the 9th Century and the purpose and role of monasteries, especial;y those of the Cisterians. It pays attention to developments among the nobility - their castles and lands, and later their country-houses and estates. It focuses on the development of towns and the emergence of the middle classes in the Czech Lands, as well as on changes in the villages and the construction of networks of fish-ponds. It looks too at structural changes and reverses, the preservation of monuments and the cultural heritage, and renewal.

The aim of this course is the acquisition of basic competence in the appreciation of historical monuments and the cultural landscape, and to bring together basic knowledge of developments in architecture and construction with an understanding of their original social and cultural functions. Buildings or archaeological discoveries are evaluated within a framework of concepts associated with sustainable development and projects of renewal from perspectives of meaning, space and time.

The main textbooks are the four-volume Dějiny hmotné kultury ( History of Material Culture, 1985-1885), edited by Josef Petráň, and the specialist encyclopedia published by Libri on different features of our architectural history: Encyklopedie českých hradů (The Encyclopedia of Czech Castles, re-published in 2005), Encyklopedie českých klášterů (The Encyclopedia of Czech Monasteries, 1995), Encyklopedie českých zámků ( The Encyclopedia of Czech Country-Houses, 2006).
