- Synopsis:
-
The target of the subject is to acquaint students with principles and tasks of radiation protection, which is definitely necessary for any application of ionizing radiation and radionuclides. There is an outline of most important quantities and units necessary for the quantification of irradiation of persons. Problems are detailed associated with determining contributions from particular components of irradiation (external and internal components) to the total effective dose. A special attention is paid to the control of irradiation of staff members, inhabitants and patients. Appropriate dose limits and their interpretation in terms of relevant legislative requirements are mentioned. Emergency situations are also considered, which are associated with nuclear and radiation accidents. Main documents and recommendations concerning radiation protection are conclusively presented.
- Requirements:
-
100% participation in practical exercises,
demonstration of the knowledge mastered by a written test,
passing the examination by the method set.
- Syllabus of lectures:
-
Lectures and exercises:
Targets and role of radiation protection, main legislative requirements for the control of radiation sources, nuclear materials and irradiation of persons.
Interaction of radiation with matter in terms of energy transfer and absorption, assembly of quantities and units employed in radiation protection.
External radiation from natural sources, concentrations of natural radionuclides in environment including water and foods.
Principles of justification, optimization and limiting in radiation protection.
Quantification of contributions from external radiation and internal contamination to the total effective dose.
Control of irradiation of staff members, relevant dose limits, requirements for monitoring of persons and occupational environment.
Control of irradiation of inhabitants relevant dose limits contribution from external irradiation and internal contamination, control of releases of radioactive substances into the environment.
Control of medical exposure (patients, persons assisting in diagnostic examinations, volunteers included into research).
Procedures in prevention and moderation of consequences of radiation methods, minimizing radiological consequences, emergency readiness of working site, monitoring of emergency situations.
Regulations and recommendations in the radiation protection:from the institutions SÚJB, ICRP, MAAE.
