Synopsis:

The seminar focuses on main features of Oracle Solaris operating systems. It aims to present Solaris administration tasks and tools to users of other operating systems (mainly Linux), with the goal of providing certain overview of the different approaches to administration in the Unix world. The course is available to students of all levels. Level of Unix administration skills is expected to vary greatly among the audience. Course level will be adapted to the prevalent skill level, while at the same

time there will be reasonable effort to make everyone benefit from the topics covered.

Requirements:

Requirements for graded credits: the main evaluation factor is the final hands-on demonstration of Solaris administration skills. It will also be possible to obtain the credits in advance, in accordance with current

Czech Technical University regulations, by presenting a short (up to 10 min.) practical presentationon a previously agreed topic. More information

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Installation (different sources and methods, customizations)

2. Package management (SVR4, IPS, command-line and GUI tools, repositories)

3. Basic administration (users and roles, runlevels, services, media)

4. Device management (naming conventions, formatting, mounting, backup and restore)

5. Network management (IPv4 and IPv6 interface configuration, wifi, name services)

6. Predictive Self Healing (FMA, SMF)

7. ZFS

8. LiveUpgrade and boot environment management

9. Zones

10. Virtualization

11. System diagnostics (logs, finding HW problems, performance monitoring)

12. mdb

13. DTrace

Syllabus of tutorials:

seminar, consisting mainly (80%) of lectures and partly

(20%) of student exercises on provided computers.

Study Objective:

To provide basic knowledge needed for Oracle Solaris operating system administration. To point out main differences between Linux and Solaris and to present the basics of Solaris diagnostic tools operation.
