Tutor:
Robert Bešťák (gar.), Jiří Chod (gar.), Zdeněk Bečvář
Supervisor:
Department of Telecommunications Engineering
Synopsis:

The goal of the course is to provide an overall overview of mobile communications in the variety of analog and digital systems. The main emphasis is put onto contemporary GSM network (including new supplementary technologies) and onto the transition towards 3rd generation networks (UMTS). It also deals with the area of mobile communications based on employment of telecommunication satellites; public and private radio / paging systems and radio networks are discussed as well.

Requirements:

Conditions for assignment of credits:

100% active participation in the exercises (in the case of absence, the

exercise should be compensated according to teacher's instructions);

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Telecommunication systems and their division. Fixed and mobile communications.

2. Basic knowledge about propagation of EM waves. Frequency bands, their limits. Structure of networks.

3. Cellular networks as a basis for current mobile communications. Modular techniques, Block diagrams.

4. Cordless telephones. Generations and standards. Structure, modulations, frequency planning.

5. Mobile cellular telephone networks - analogue systems. Generations and standards, incorporation into future networks.

6. Mobile cellular telephone networks - digital systems. Review of systems and standards. Differences and regional applications.

7. Mobile cellular telephone networks - digital systems. Compatibility and incorporation. GSM.

9. GSM - services and their incorporation. Transfer of data in GSM systems - HSCSD, GPRS...

10. Technical equipment of GSM systems and their generations. Structure of individual network levels and block diagrams.

11. Satellite communication. Telecommunication satellites - GEO, MEO, LEO. Individual systems and their applications.

12. Public paging systems. Communication ways and software equipment. Ways of technical realisations.

13. Public and private radio networks. Basic divisions. Applications.

14. 3rd generation mobile system - UMTS. Structure, standards. Future development. Network convergence.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Introductory exercise. Safety regulations and lab operations.

2. Mobile communications systems - basic functional blocks.

3. R&D lab and its structure. Block diagrams of CT0 - CT2, DECT devices.

4. DECT - practical applications of small networks.

5. DECT and data transfer. Incorporation into networks.

6. Bluetooth and its application.

7. GSM system - basic blocks and their practical interconnections.

8. GSM - architecture of systems and subsystems. Practical realisation.

9. GSM - data tranfer - HSCSD - control measurements.

10. GSM - data tranfer - GPRS - control measurements.

11. Satellite communications. Individual systems and their applications. Connection to GSM.

12. Connection between PSTN, ISDN, GSM networks.

13. Examples of UMTS networks.

14. Exam. Alternative seminar/lab.

Study Objective:

By completing the course the student obtains a general overview of the wireless systems including cordless systems, mobile networks, satellite networks and WLAN and BWA.
