The course is designed for students attending the bachelor?s program ´Software Technologies and Management´, who study English as a compulsory subject and whose knowledge of English corresponds to Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students are supposed to reach Level C1.
Course objective: The course focuses on consolidating communicative skills, covering selected topic-related technical texts and practising difficult grammar points.

Grammar:
Articles, Countables, Uncountables, Compound Nouns, Plural of Nouns, Adjectives and Adverbs, Pronouns, Quantifiers, Verbs (all tenses), Passive Voice in Technical Writing, Modal Verbs and Past Modals, Participles and Gerund, Infinitives, Phrasal Verbs, Questions, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Subject-Verb Agreement, Word Order, Clauses of Purpose, Time Clauses, Relative Clauses, Conditional Clauses, Sequence of Tenses, Reported Speech, Word Formation.
Language comprehension:
Evaluation and emphasis will be put on reading comprehension, understanding the topic, picking up key words and explaining their meaning.
Oral skills:
Students are supposed to use the language independently and effectively in all situations giving their own opinions and defending their ideas and beliefs. They should be able to briefly explain a technical process in their own words to specialists and non-specialists. Presentation and interview techniques are stressed.
Technical topics: tailor-made to economics, management, software and electrical engineering relevant to the STM program
Career oriented topics: My Future Career Prospects, , Applying for a Job, Interview Techniques, Giving Presentations.
General topics: Work and Travel, Geography, Culture, Customs and Traditions, Sports and Leisure Activities, Global Economic, Political and Environmental Issues, Media.
Writing:
Emphasis is put on the expression of ideas in the independent writing of paragraphs and short essays. Students should be able to present a short basic argument in written English.
Writing techniques - business and private correspondence, application forms, curriculum vitae.
Technical English: Knowledge of basic technical terminology and acronyms
Topics: The EU; Energy Green Paper; A Way To Cut Fuel Consumption; A two-factor method for appraising building renovation and energy efficiency improvement; Investment criteria for the selection of cogeneration; Marketing Research; Adaptive Modulation; The Camera Analogy; Mixed Reality in Education, Entertainment, and Training; The Business Case for WCM?.

Examination:
a) written test - based on grammar and lexicology
Students who did not attend the courses offered by the department must write the final semester
test first before taking the A2 exam.
b) oral part - reading a technical text with understanding (study reading techniques - skimming and
scanning, comprehension and discussion questions based on the text, translation)
-oral interaction, comprehending the content of the spoken message
Using the dictionary is allowed.

The course objective is to consolidate skills aimed at gathering information from technical texts, studying and developing topic-related vocabulary, and processing information in guided presentations.
Grammar: Revision of tenses, making questions (direct, indirect, subject), modal verbs with emphasis on past modals, passive forms, using gerunds and infinitives to reduce clauses, subject - verb agreement, articles, adjectives and adverbs, verbs + preposition, time clauses, prepositions of time and place.
Reading: Topic-related technical reading texts, interpreting graphs and diagrams, mathematical expressions.
Writing: Developing presentation skills and techniques, summarizing the content of an article, writing short essays.
Vocabulary: specialised terminology from the field of informatics, graphics, economics and management. Translating technical texts using monolingual and online dictionaries.
