Synopsis:

The course is suitable for students who take English as their major language and whose knowledge of English corresponds to the level A2 - B1 according to the European Language Frame.

The course focuses on communicative skills - self-expression, understanding and orientation in a wide-range of topics dealing with real-life situations. All interconnected language skills - writing, speaking, reading, listening, grammar and phonetics - are submitted to the goal of developing the required communicative skills for real life.

Syllabus of lectures:

Course objective: The course is aimed at developing and strengthening communicative skills. Owing to authentic texts, students are confronted with real-life situations. Personalised tasks (grammar practise, vocabulary, phonetics, speaking, reading, listening and writing) are intended to develop fluency and accuracy.

Topics: Friendship, relaxation, dating and relationships, sports, childhood, news, parties and festivals.

Speaking: Discussions aimed at the given topics, expressing opinions, showing interest and empathising, making invitations, accepting and refusing invitations, making arrangements, stating intentions, excuses.

Writing: Informal letters about yourself, informal letters giving news, letters of invitation, letters of acceptance and refusal, e-mails, film reviews.

Listening: Authentic recordings referring to the discussed topics, dealing with information in the discussions and exercises.

Reading: Letters, e-mails, extracts from authentic texts, interviews, texts referring to the discussed topics.

Grammar:

-Questions in various tenses (yes/no questions; wh-questions; subject and object questions; questions ending with prepositions; questions with modals)

-Simple present tense and present continuous, present perfect tense, simple past tense and past continuous for expressing various communicative aspects

-Adverbs and adverb phrases of frequency

-Adjectives: simple, compound, ending in -ed/-ing; gradable and absolute adjectives; comparison

-Defining relative clauses

-Repeated past actions (would, used to)

-Passive voice

-Expressing future (will, to be going to, present tense continuous)

-Phrasal verbs

Phonetics: aimed at stress; practising the phonetic system of English vowels
