Lecturer:
Jiří Vodrážka (gar.), Pavel Kovář (gar.)
Tutor:
Jiří Vodrážka (gar.), Pavel Kovář (gar.)
Supervisor:
Department of Telecommunications Engineering
Synopsis:

The course gives an overview of the basic principles and methods used in digital communications in a variety of transmission environments (radio systems, metallic telecommunication lines, optical fiber). The students will learn the basic functional blocks of the communication systems, encoding and decoding, modulation and demodulation methods. The students obtain the idea about sources of errors in the transmission and ways for their detection and correction. They will learn how to calculate the theoretical and practical communication channel capacity, the basic parameters on digital interfaces measurement, including error rate and jitter.

Requirements:

The credit shall require 100% attendance and treatment of laboratory projects and submission of individual project. Evaluation of the exam consists of approximately 20% of the exercises, 30% individual project, 50% for their own exam.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Shannon?s diagram of a general communication system, blocks function, channel capacity

2.Channel coding, classification of the coding methods, convolutional and block codes

3.Error detection and correction (fundaments and implementation of the CRC and RS codes, interleaving, ARQ)

4.Digital modulation and its applications, multi-carrier modulation OFDM

5.Channel multiplexing, multiple access methods (TDMA, FDMA, CDMA), spread spectrum communication (DS SS, FH SS, TH SS)

6.Radio function blocks and their function

7.Radio systems, examples

8.Telecommunication line, using for broadband digital transmission, modeling of primary and secondary parameters

9.AWGN channel with NEXT and FEXT crosstalk, channel capacity and crosstalk cancellation

10.Regeneration of digital signal, inter-symbol interference, eye diagram

11.Probability of error for AWGN, measurement of error rate, parameters for evaluate bit and block error

12.Function blocks of modems, example of SHDSL and ADSL modems

13.Fiber optic communication, basic types of fiber, elementary calculation of fiber lines

14.Basic parameters of optical and digital interfaces measurement, impulse mask, jitter and wander
