Synopsis:

In its first part students will get a basic knowledge in fundamental theoretical background related to the transmission of the light energy along a fibre. Also the important transmission parameters of a fibre are quoted here. In a second part an afford is made to answer a number of questions more related to a different optical systems used today. There are mentioned a various modulation methods, coding principles, multiplexing, etc.

1. The introduction. The historical development. The Optoelectronic system definition

2. The theory of optical beams propagations in a optical fibre

3. The optical line system installation

4. The fiber cable structures and parameters

5. The optical fibre joining. The passive optical elements - connectors, couplers

6. The optical fibre lasers - the operational principles, parameters

7. The electroluminiscent diodes - the operational principles, parameters

8. The optical detectors. The PN diodes, The PIN diodes, The APD diodes

9. The optical receivers with a direct detection

10. The optical amplifiers and basic introduction to integrated optics

11. The optical transmission systems with direct detection - optical receiver and transmitter

12. The optical transmission systems with a coherent detection

13. The optical line systems for PDH, SDH and ATM, optical interfaces,

14. The basic introduction to FITL, FTTH, FTTC and FDDI computer network

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. The introduction to the optical systems ; Safety rules that must be dwell in laboratory

2. The excursion - the optical fibre fabrication; the fibre from perform pulling demonstration

3. The introduction to the individual practical exercises

4. The optical fibre fusion splicing

5. The optical fibre numerical aperture measurement

6. The optical systems measurements using „OPTEL“ kit

7. The Assessment test

8. The parameter measurements on PCM second order optical line system

9. The basic optical fibre attenuation measurement using the direct method and OTDR

10. The introduction to the OTDR software and evaluation of different optical line tracks

11. The solution of some practical examples on optical line system design

12. The Assessment test

13. The substitutional day, consultations, etc.

14. The final assessment
