Synopsis:

The subject is devoted to an introduction to the multimedia (audio and video) technology. It deals with fundamentals of audio and video sensing, signal processing, broadcasting, recording and reproduction including physiology of hearing and vision. The broad overview of these topics is given.

1. Basic aspects of image transmission - information content of image

2. Basic aspects of sound transmission - problems of audio transmission chain

3. Physiology and anatomy of hearing, speech signal, musical signal, noise, spectral char.

4. Physiology of vision, TV standard, colorimetry, analog and digital TV signal

5. Source image coding - NTSC, PAL, MPEG-2, psychovisual aspects

6. Source sound coding - psychocoustic aspects, masking, Musicam, critical bands

7. Broadcasting videosystems - standards of analog transmission, DVB, TV receiver

8. Broadcasting audiosystems - analog transmission, DAB, MPEG-audio, compression

9. Studio audio technology - basic electroacoustic transducers, signal recording

10. Studio video technology - image recording techniques, supplemental services

11. Image sensors and displays, fundamentals of photography and cinematography

12. Loudspeaker systems, centralized and distributed sound reinforcement

13. Sound information in multimedia technology, multimedia aspects of sound

14. Video information in multimedia technology, multimedia aspects of image

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Physiological properties of vision - assessment of basic parameters of vision

2. Subjective colorimeter - color light parameters evaluation, various representations

3. System NTSC and PAL - basic properties of analog color TV systems

4. Image compression - computer simulation and subjective assessment methods

5. Measurements of image sensor properties - parameters, image quality impact

6. Measurements of TV receiver - measurement of basic block properties

7. Calculation of sound field, solution of wave equation in one dimension

8. Basic problems in acoustics - numerical solution of vibrating systems

9. Measurement of directional characteristics of receivers, directional factor and index, power

10. Measurement of properties of physiological audiosystem, auditory tests, evaluation princ.

11. Measurement of loudspeaker impedance in closed and bass-reflex enclosures

12. Design and measurement of loudspeaker filters and loudspeaker systems

13. Recording media - compact disk, magnetic media, DVD, MD
