Synopsis:

The course conveys to the students basic knowledge on the properties of semiconductors and their applications for structures of fundamental passive and active electronic devices. It deals with details of device internal structures, physical conditions of their operation and basic characteristics. Teaches the methods of design work with devices, fundamental approaches to calculations of elementary electronic circuits. Deals with the device behavior for small and large analog, digital and optical signals

Requirements:

100% attendance (re-make of missed exercises during the 14th week), submit processed results of all measurements in the laboratory workbook, successful pass in the final test

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Basic types and properties of semiconductors.

2. The P-A junction. Diodes (Zener, rectifying). Characteristics, parameters, applications.

3. Metal-semiconductor junctions. Schottky diodes. Characteristics, parameters, applications.

4. Bipolar junction transistors: structure, operation, properties. BJT states, limit values.

5. BJTs: basic circuits, operating point. Equivalent circuits, differential parameters.

6. JFETs and MOSFETs: structures, principles of operation, properties. Basic circuits, operating points.

7. FETs: limit parameters, protections. Equivalent circuits, differential parameters.

8. Power applications: BJTs, FETs. Operating classes, efficiency, cooling. Switching mode.

9. Power devices: thyristor, IGBT. Structures, principles, applications.

10. Introduction to operational amplifier theory and application; ideal OA, feedback networks.

11. Real OA, DC error parameters. Stability of OAs, frequency compensation.

12. Structures of gates, characteristics, parameters. Cascading of gates. Bus drivers.

13. Flip-flops, memory cells SRAM, DRAM, EPROM, EEPROM, FLASH.

14. Optoelectronics: LED, laser, photodiode, phototransistor, optron. Principles, applications.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Laboratory regulations, instrumentation, its operation. Security regulations.

2. Seminar: Semi-graphical solution of simple circuits with diodes.

3. Measurements of diodes: electrical characteristics, thermal parameters, equivalent circuit.

4. Application of diodes: rectifiers, filters, peak currents, voltage regulation.

5. Measurement of BJTs: characteristics, differential parameters, LEC design, calculations.

6. Seminar: Semi-graphical design of a BJT circuits, small-signal amplifier.

7. Measurement of a BJT: small-signal amplifier, check of the calculated values.

8. Measurement of a JFET: V-A characteristics, differential parameters, basic amplifiers.

9. Power MOSFET measurement: fundamental power switching circuit properties.

10. Analog power amplifier with a BJT in Class B and Class AB.

11. Operational amplifier measurement: basic circuits, amplifier, voltage follower, comparator.

12. Basic thyristor circuits: measurement of a phase-controlled circuit.

13. Final written test.

14. Finishing missed measurements, issue of grades.
