Synopsis:

The course is aimed at providing an overview of sources, roles and flows of information in a manufacturing company. The student will learn standards for formal description of information flows and processes in a company. Attention is paid to principles of data modelling on a level sufficient for mutual communication with a data analyst, or for starting a specialised study in the field of data modelling. The student will understand the difference between concepts data/information/knowledge. State of the art and means for efficient application of knowledge in the management of a modern company will be presented. Principals and existing software means supporting project management will be introduced at the end.

Requirements:

Presence according general regulations, succesful presentation of working groups in 7th week, succesful test.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Types of information, sources and processes in a manufacturing company

2. Analysis and modeling of information flows in a manufacturing company, IDEF0 methodology

3. Corporate information model, corporate information system architecture

4. Data modelling, E-R models, data flow diagrams, functional decomposition

5. Relational model, integrity constrains, data model quality

6. Data retrieval by SELECT queries

7. Concurrent approach to data, distributed databases, replication systems, data synchronisation

8. Object-oriented and object-relational databases

9. Data, information, knowledge, role of knowledge in management, knowledge management

10. Knowledge representation, knowledge-based systems

11. Data warehouses, data mining

12. Geografical information systems

13. Teamwork management, project management

14. Softwar tools for project management

1. Seminar organization, safety, establishing working groups

2. Model manufacturing process definition

3. Information model creation

4. Information model completion

7. Presentation of results of working groups

8. Practical implementation of the designed data model in a real database environment

9. Interactive querying

11. Practical demonstration of a simple expert system

12. Individual work with the expert system

13. Interactive demonstration of a data warehouse

14. Presentation of a geographical information system
