Introduction to Biomedical Informatics

Synopsis:

The aim of this course is to get the students knowledgeable with basics of biomedical engineering and application of information technologies in this field. Attention is paid to topics starting from basic cybernetic approaches of life organisms investigation and modelling through principles of evolution to medical instrument systems. During the seminars the students will get basic experience with the programming of medical devices, with the visualization systems as well with techniques of biomedical informatics.

Requirements:

For successful completion of the course, it is necessary to present the results of the individual work to other students and explain the approaches used.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. The introductory concepts of biomedical informatics

2. Biological signals

3. Basic approaches of biocybernetics

4. Organs and organisms modelling and simulation

5. Information transfer in living organisms, memory

6. Principles of adaptation and learning

7. Species memory, basics of genetics

8. Control in organisms and societies, homeostasis

9. Evolution principles, deterministic chaos, artificial life

10. Medical instrumentation basics - part 1.

11. Medical instrumentation basics - part 2.

12. Medical instruments programming - part 1.

13. Medical instruments programming - part 2.

14. Medical visualisation methods

Syllabus of tutorials:

For the „individual projects“, small working groups of students will be established.

1. Matlab and Simulink as a basic modelling environment, sample individual task assignment

2. Samples of biological systems modelling

3. Consultation on the sample individual task

7. Neural network demonstration

8. Consultation on the sample individual task

9. Presentation of individual work partial results
