Synopsis:

Basic overview of telecommunication devices and technologies. Telecommunication signals and channels, terminal devices. Telecommunications law and standardization. Transmission paths - classification, properties and methods of multiple utilization. Transmission and switching devices and systems. Basic principles of digital transmission. Data interfaces and data transmission in telecommunications networks. Properties of conventional and mobile telecommunication networks, their utilization. Telecommunication services.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. History of telecommunications. Telecommunications law.

2 . Telecommunications standards. Telecommunication signals, channels. OSI reference model.

3. Basic modulation methods for transmission of telecommunication signals. Methods for multiple utilization of transmission paths. PDH systems.

4. Switching systems - characteristics. Signalling.

5. SDH systems. Telecommunications networks. Inteligent Networks. NGN networks. Transmission of digital signals, modulation and transmission speeds.

6. Conclusions of homogenous lines theory. Classification of transmission paths. Metallic, optical and radio transmission paths. Basic types of signals and their spectra.

7. Bit error ratio, methods of transmission securing. Data link. Selected data interfaces.

8. Data converters and modems. Data transmission in telephone networks.

9. Modems. High-speed data converters.

10. HDSL, ADSL and VDSL convertors. Utilization of power lines and distribution networks for transmission of speech and data.

11. Data transmission in CATV networks. Networks with switching of packets, frames and cells. X.25 interface.

12. Communication in X.25. Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), principles an properties. ISDN services. Telematic and other services. B-ISDN.

13. Mobile networks (GSM, UMTS). Data transmission in mobile networks.

14. Convergence of telecommunication networks and services. Quality of services (QoS) evaluation. Future in telecommunications.

3. Measurements on analog transmission devices. Analog measuring instruments.

4. Measurements on digital transmission devices. Instruments for measuring of digital quantities.

5. Introduction to the series of measurements.

6. Measuring of parameters of metallic and optical transmission paths.

7. Practical approach to implementation of local cabling and LAN networks.

8. Measuring and setting of data circuits.

9. Measuring and setting in cellular telephone and data networks.

10. Modems and radiomodems used for data transmission and Internet access.

11. Transmission of speech, data, images and access to Internet using ISDN.

12. Coding, error protection, trafic - examples
