Synopsis:

Students will obtain the basic knowledge in a fundamental functional principles of the telecommunication systems, the digital transmission systems and signal processing theory. The main subjects are physical media parameters, access and backbone network technology, for example PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy), SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), xDSL (Digital Subscribe Line) and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network).

Requirements:

Conditions to obtain the credit: 100% presence at the practices, elaboration and presentation of students project,elaboration of laboratory tasks.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Telecommunication services, wideband requirements, standardization.

2. Telephone channel, voice signal processing, PCM30/32.

3. Multiplexing methods, PDH and SDH transmission systems.

4. Backbone and access networks.

5. Data links, data interfaces.

6. OSI Reference model, protocol architectures.

7. Protocols TCP/IP.

8. xDSL systems, features and applications.

9. ISDN networks, features.

10. ATM and MPLS networks, features.

11. Digital exchange systems, switching networks type S and T.

12. Optical access networks, hybrid networks, CATV.

13. Mobile and satellite systems.

14. Wireless systems.

1. Introduction, Content of practices, Requirements to obtain the credit.

3. Description of transmission chains.

4. Task 1 (Measurement of optical fiber), group A.

5. Task 1 (Measurement of optical fiber), group B.

6. Task 2 (ADSL - measurement on ADSL connections), group A.

7. Task 2 (ADSL - measurement on ADSL connections), group A.

8. Task 3 (Voice over IP networks), group A.

9. Task 3 (Voice over IP networks), group B.

10. Network simulators used in telecommunication networks

11. Localization systems - GPS, Galileo, etc.

12. Presentation of seminar projects I. Check of elaborated tasks I.

13. Presentation of seminar projects II. Check of elaborated tasks II.

14. Credit.

Study Objective:

By completing the course the student obtains a general overview of the telecommunications systems including the principles and functions of digital telecommunications systems, both transmission and switching systems, ensuring voice and data services using copper, fiber and wireless transmission media.
