Synopsis:

Observer and impact of technical means. Image processing in visual system. Color perception. Photography, cinematography, polygraphy. 3D displays. Image compression techniques for multimedia. Image formats in multimedia and computer technology. Standards MPEG-4 and MPEG-7. Copyright protection. HDTV.

1. Introduction

2. Multimedia technology and observer, digital photography

3. Physiological and psychovisual properties of vision - hierarchy of image processing

4. Photometry, colorimetry - perception and color fidelity (CIE XYZ and CIE LAB)

5. Photography - negative and positive processes, cinematography, printing

6. 3D systems - techniques for sensing and reproduction, holography - applications

7. Image compression techniques of 2nd generation (DPCM, DCT, motion prediction)

8. Image compression for multimedia - IIIrd generation (wavelets, fractals, models)

9. Image and AV formats for multimedia and computer technology

10. Image preprocessing techniques - basic operations with image

11. Compression standards for multimedia - MPEG-4, MPEG-7

12. Copyright protection, conditional access, image databases

13. IHDTV - technology, distribution

14. Conclusion

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Introduction, organization and content of labs, working groups

2. Laboratory experiments - explanation (Physiology I. and II., Colorimetry). Safety

3. Physiology of vision I. - flicker, transfer characteristics, observer dependance

4. Colorimetry - colorimetric parameters of displays, CIE diagram

5. Physiology of vision II. - viewing angle, resolution, comparison with TV standards

6. Test

7. Laboratory experiments - explanation (Object. criteria, Subject. criteria, Compression)

8. Objective criteria of image quality - expression, MSE, MAD etc.

9. Subjective criteria of image quality - luminance, chrominance and motion components

10. Image compression techniques - DCT, wavelet, models

11. Test

12. Computer simulation - MPEG-4 (selected parts of coding chain)

13. Colloquium - discussion of theoretical parts, examples

14. Conclusion, evaluation and assessment
