This course focuses on hardware and software of the most important data transmission means (modems, baseband-modems, hi-speed data systems - sDSL, PLC, wireless systems WiFi and WiMax, IPTV systems...), application of these means in telephone and data networks, especially in the specific environment of the Czech Republic. The emphasis is put onto practical introduction of the most important devices, their operation and diagnostics.

1. Layered model of communication. Data link. Conventional data interfaces.
2. Properties of data interfaces: USB.
3. Properties of data interfaces: W-USB, IEEE1394 (FireWire).
4. Data converters and modems (classification). Phoneline modems and functions of their most important components.
5. Properties of data interfaces: MIDI, S/PDIF.
6. Modern wireless networks.
7. Ripple control systems. Telematic services and similar services.
8. Employment of power distribution lines and networks for transmission of voice and data signals, PLC systems.
9. Data transmission in CATV networks.
10. Data transmission in mobile networks.
11. High-speed data converters (classification). HDSL converters. ADSL modems. VDSL modems.
12. Basic features and utilization of IPTV.
13. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems.
14. Navigation systems, GPS.
