Synopsis:

History and essential points of TV system design. Functional blocks of TV system - theoretical description and practical applications. Description of TV signal properties and its digitisation. TV transmission systems - analog (NTSC, PAL) and digital (MPEG-2). TV broadcasting - terrestrial, satellite and cable. Additional services in TV. The subject offers detailed information about television systems, their properties and parameters.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction, history of television, fundamentals

2. Imaging in TV, objectives, MTF, PSF, distortions and aberrations of imaging systems

3. Theoretical problems of TV - spectrum of TV signal, aperture distortion, noise analysis,

4. TV colorimetry and transmission signals, chrominance vector, constant-luminance rule

5. Analogue systems NTSC,PAL - quadrature modulation, phase error compensation

6. Analogue broadcasting, satellite and terrestrial, frequency allocation, modulation

7. Circuitry of TV blocks, multistandard TV receiver, basic functional blocks

8. Source image compression techniques - DPCM, DCT with quantization, VLC, RLC

9. Coding in DVB - MPEG 2, PES and transport stream, FEC - error correction, QEF

10. DVB - T, S, C, ATSC, types of modulation, OFDM and its properties, SFN - realization

11. CATV - specifics of CATV, frequency allocation, return channel and interactivity

12. Measurements in TV - luminance and chrominance channels, BER, image quality

13. Preprocessing of TV image - digitisation, noise suppression, correction of distortion

14. Additional services in TV - teletext, VPS, Video-on-demand, NVOD, interactive TV

1. Introduction, organization and content of labs, working groups

2. Laboratory experiments (explanation) - TV signal, S/N ratio, TV measurements. Safety

3. TV signal, digitization of TV signal (evaluation of TV signal parameters)

4. Signal-to-noise ratio in TV camera (test pattern method - evaluation)

5. Test lines, interference immunity of PAL (test line applications, interferences in PAL)

6. Test

7. Laboratory experiments (explanation) - TVR tuner, Color TVR, Scanning and HV

8. Tuner of TVR (transmission characteristics of amplifier, mixing)

9. Transmission characteristics of color TVR (IF amplifier, video and audio processing)

10. High-voltage generation, deflection units in TVR (vertical and horizontal - parameters)

11. Test

12. Computer simulation - MPEG-2 (functional blocks of coding chain - function)

13. Colloquium - discussion of theoretical parts, examples

14. Conclusion, evaluation and assessment
